In 2050, 6 billion of the world's population will live in cities. For this reason, countries should take into account cities in their strategic development plans.

What are the Strategic Energy Needs of Cities

The energy spent on transportation (gasoline, fuel oil) in cities is in the range of approximately 30-40%. The energy needed by the industry in cities is in the limitation of 30-35%. Likewise, the heating, enlightenment, and energy needs of houses, social, and public facilities are around 30-35%.

What is the Role of Ministry

Ministries are responsible for fulfilling the shared energy, transport, environment, and social demands of a country including all of its cities. To illustrate this, the purchase of liquefied gas from other countries to meet the natural gas demand of cities during the winter season can be a good example.

What Makes a City Sustainable

Cities that use more secondary energy sources (wind energy, solar energy, waste-to-energy, etc.) are more healthy.

Environment and Waste Management

5% of Denmark’s energy stock is provided by waste. 35% of Vienna’s residences are heated by waste-to-energy. The cooling of the Vienna state hospital is provided by the reverse osmosis method from the garbage. Therefore, if cities can manage their waste management properly, planned, and sustainably, they can meet the energy demands of their countries as in Denmark.

30-40% of the energy needs of the cities is the energy consumed by the movement of vehicles in traffic. If we can move people living in the city to use rather than vehicles, for instance, bicycle, pedestrian, public transportation systems, the energy used in traffic can decrease.

Ministries should explain their strategic decisions concerning their societies with the simplest methods to be understood by their citizens. These methods should encourage the citizens to adopt, understand, and implement these strategic decisions. For instance; sorting garbage, increasing walking distances and energy efficiency, etc.

What Should Ministries Do

Ministries should develop their own unique successful city solutions. For this, they can examine the best city models in the world and use sample city models with the “Best practice” method. We provide training, workshop, and consultancy services to the ministries on this subject.
